This is about remembering the ecologies that have been pushed out of the city. The Parks Victoria Office and Depot is located in Albert Park. The brief called for a new building to house the Park maintenance team and the offices of Parks Victoria’s regional staff. Critical of the diminished state of Albert Park’s existing ecology, our project reintroduces indigenous and endemic plants to the site, providing a botanic reminder of the ecology that pre-dated the current version of 19th Century European parkland. The design integrates building and landscape. Green spaces shade, cool and animate the building. At its heart is a courtyard space that brings landscape into the centre, acting as a source of ventilation and light. A continuous volume of soil at the level 1 slab hosts a parasitic garden that climbs up and over the façade, projecting the idea of building-as-landscape when seen from the Park, and providing a biophilic workplace when seen from within. The central courtyard is also a space for social gathering and public mixing – a common ground between the Park and its caretakers. This new facility has reduced organisation separations and has allowed for a vastly improved visitor and staff experience.
