076 Nightingale Village

This is the benefit of thinking collectively. Nightingale Village is a triple bottom-line, sustainable housing precinct in Brunswick. Openwork provided Urban Design and Landscape Architectural services for the precinct Master Plan and Landscape Architectural services for four of the six buildings that form the precinct. The Master Plan sees the project not as the delivery of autonomous buildings, but as the provision of shared spatial infrastructure that has fundamentally changed the way in which buildings work and the way in which they meet the ground. The shared infrastructures include precinct-based car parking, public space as a common ground between the buildings, shared waste, energy and water utilities and a new street hierarchy of interstitial mews’ formed from voluntary building setbacks. The plan’s ability to consolidate car-parking and services from six sites to one leaves Duckett Street car-and-crossover-free and maximises the ability for each building to activate the resulting public realm. The Precinct Plan and its implementation are intended to have an agency outside of its scope of works, establishing an extendible spatial armature and a new kind of public realm in Brunswick – one that offers private space for public use and that animates public space with private life.
