This is a place of strength. The Victorian Family Violence Memorial is located next to the Parliament Precinct in East Melbourne and has an outlook to Fitzroy Gardens. The design responds to the State Government’s brief for a permanent memorial for victims and survivors of family violence – a space where members of the community could gather and could reflect. The design for the Memorial is framed around five elemental design moves (a fold, a room, a wall, a seat and a garden) that change the way people behave in the site rather than changing the site itself. A large fold in the landscape forms an elevated space for congregation and the view beyond to Fitzroy Gardens. A Memorial wall folds into the landscape supporting the land above. A room defined by a seating edge sits below an existing elm tree and orientates the body to the Memorial wall and to the Gardens. New precast concrete decking is suspended above the tree protection zone of the Elm, creating a room accessed through a moment of procession and compression bracketed by planting. There is both a subtlety and strength to this landscape. The Memorial creates a place of pause and intimacy, while allowing people to feel connected to the broader parklands beyond.
